Brendan Rodgers is in surprise contention for the Chelsea job

Tom Victor

There are not too many managers who have the ability to fall upwards in their career.

Alan Pardew is one, getting the Newcastle job after parting ways with a Southampton side who were then in League 1, while many of us were confused by Rafa Benitez’s ability to end up in the Real Madrid hotseat after struggling at Napoli.

Brendan Rodgers may be able to add his name to that list soon, with the Belfast Telegraph reporting that the former Liverpool boss is in the frame for the Chelsea job if Jose Mourinho is sacked.

Rodgers spent time at Chelsea during Mourinho’s first spell at the club, coaching the youth and reserve teams before leaving to take his first managerial job at Watford in 2008.

It may be a case of Blues owner Roman Abramovich looking to stick with familiar faces, as he did with Roberto Di Matteo in the past, with the odds on the Northern Irishman taking the reins at Stamford Bridge being slashed.

Rodgers is now 7/1 for the job with selected bookmakers, having been as long as 20/1, with reports suggesting he would be put in charge on an interim basis.

And ironically, Mourinho’s fate could be sealed by a defeat against Rodgers’ former club Liverpool.
