This can only mean one thing, right?
Manchester United are set to announce Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the club’s new permanent manager this month, according to reports, with the club axing plans to name Jose Mourinho’s permanent successor at the season’s end.
According to reports in the Mirror, United will look to confirm Solskjaer as permanent manager during the international break, after a stunning start to his time in the dugout at Old Trafford in which the club has won 14 games, drawn two and lost just twice.
Solskjaer took over from the sacked Jose Mourinho after United’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in December, and – despite his appointment being viewed initially as an attempt to jolt positivity into an ailing team – the Norwegian has shown himself to be more of a tactical mind than many had previously given him credit for.
He has impressed enormously during his short time at the club – with the 2-0 win away to Chelsea in the FA Cup and the stunning Champions League comeback against Paris Saint-Germain being the obvious highlights – and in doing so has made himself the sole candidate for a job which most pundits had previously believed to be Mauricio Pochettino’s, should he choose to take it.
However, Solskjaer’s impact at the club where he won so much as a player has been so great that it would represent both a surprise and a risk to player and supporter happiness were they to appoint anyone else.
After United’s FA Cup tie with Wolves at the weekend, their next domestic match takes place on 30 March, by which time the club hope to have Solskjaer installed as permanent boss.
