Van Dijk’s header put Liverpool back in front in Munich

Second half headers from Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane saw Liverpool eliminate Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16s.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had opened the scoring midway through the first half in Germany, Sadio Mane’s superbly taken goal putting them in control of the tie.

The German champions were, however, able to equalise before half-time. Joel Matip, under pressure from Robert Lewandowski  inadvertently turning Serge Gnabry’s cross into his own goal from close range.

The score remained 1-1 until the 69th minute when Van Dijk’s thumping header re-established the Liverpool lead. Their second away goal of the tie, it was enough to put them in a commanding position for the final stages of the game after a goalless first leg on Merseyside last month.

With Bayern failing to create much in the final stages of the game, Mane sealed a famous win for the Reds with his second of the night, heading home Mo Salah’s cross from inside the six yard box.

Liverpool’s win in Bavaria sees them join the other three English clubs into the last eight of the competition. Tottenham and Manchester City also beat German opposition – Borussia Dortmund and Schalke respectively – while Manchester United sprung a surprise turnaround in their second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.
