A Bristol City season ticket holder has avoided a stadium ban despite repeatedly chanting “you’re all p***s” at Wolverhampton Wanderers supporters during a cup tie at Ashton Gate on February 17.

Matthew Leggett pleaded guilty to a racially aggravated public order offence at the Bristol Magistrates’ Court on March 29.

The court was told that a family – including two children – sitting in the Dolman Stand in front of Leggett could hear the racist slurs being shouted from behind them.

The father warned Leggett to stop or he would tell a steward, but he refused to heed the warning.

After the family informed a steward of the abuse – with Leggett shouting “You’re all p***s, you’re all p***s” – and describing the person responsible, he was removed from the stadium.

Speaking during the case, Leggett was quoted as saying that his comments were in response to chants from the Wolves supporters of “you’re Welsh and you know you are”.

“He is immature in his understanding of the impact of his offending. There is a need for education on the impact of this language,” Bristol Live have quoted Leggett’s lawyer, Mark Linehan, as saying.

“He accepts that he said the most repulsive of the comments in the response to the ‘Welsh’ chants. That cannot be a comeback in this case.”

Reacting to the case, Bristol City stated that they were disappointed that a football banning order was not issued, but confirmed that the process to ban Leggett from their stadium was already underway.
