Former Liverpool captain Tommy Smith has died, aged 74.

Smith, who was famously known as ‘The Anfield Iron’ throughout his playing career due to his tough and uncompromising playing style, passed away on Friday. He had been suffering with dementia.

Born in Liverpool, Smith spent 18 years of his playing career at Anfield,  making over 600 appearances for the club and eventually becoming captain.

In 1977, he scored in the final against Borussua Mönchengladbach as Liverpool lifted the European Cup for the first time. He also won four league titles.

Towards the end of his career, he had spells with the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Los Angeles Aztecs in the US. He also played for Swansea City in the 1978-79 season before calling time on his playing days.
