Chucky murders Woody from Toy Story on poster for the new Child’s Play movie

That’s how you grab our attention

After murdering his way through seven Child’s Play movies, Chucky the killer doll is getting a reboot in the relaunch of the classic horror series.

We’ve already gotten a trailer for the film, so normally a new poster would not be that newsworthy. But there is something pretty clever – and cheeky – about this one.

The latest Child’s Play poster implies that Chucky’s latest victim is none other Woody from the Toy Story films.

The recognisable trainer of Chucky is seen walking away from a familiar cowboy hat, and arm seemingly ripped off a Western-themed doll.

Of course, we are sure that the film’s lawyers would say that this is definitely not Woody, and a legally distinct cowboy doll. It is highly unlikely that this crossover is endorsed by the Disney corporation.

The long-awaited Toy Story 4 is in cinemas the same month as Child’s Play, and this new poster is also eerily similar to one of the official ones for the Pixar movie.

The crossover of the Child’s Play and Toy Story worlds does lead to some existential questions though.

The 1988 original Child’s Play involved a serial killer transferring his soul into the body of a doll, who then proceeds to go on a murderous rampage. It isn’t clear how much of that plot will remain here, as there seems to be a strong A.I. vibe going on, and if we were to guess, it looks like this version of Chucky has more in common with Skynet than it does with serial killers.

Of course, one of the greatest assets that the original had was the incredible voice work by Brad Dourif, but this time around, they’ve only gone and got Mark Hamill, who (when he isn’t saving a far, far away galaxy, a long, long time ago) was amazing as the voice of The Joker in the iconic Batman: The Animated Series.

Child’s Play is in cinemas July 21st.
