County lost 3-1Â in their final-day game at Swindon Town
Notts County have been relegated from the English Football League for the first time in their history.
The world’s oldest professional league team and one of the Football League’s founder members had to win their final-day fixture at Swindon Town and hope that Macclesfield Town lost their game against Cambridge in order to survive in League Two.
However, a 3-1 defeat for the Magpies condemned them to the drop, with Macclesfield drawing their match 1-1.
Notts County had taken the lead early in the second half at the County Ground courtesy of Kane Hemmings’ penalty. With Macclesfield trailing to Cambridge at that point, they were briefly poised to survive.
However, Elliott Durrell’s equaliser for the Silkmen put County back on course for the drop, before Swindon scored three times in the final 21 minutes to seal their fate.
