‘I’m sorry about the language but can I say these boys are fucking talented giants’
Liverpool pulled off the impossible on Tuesday night, channeling the spirit of Istanbul to once again overcome a three goal deficit to beat the tournament favourites 4-3 on aggregate.
Gini Wijnaldum, who replaced Andy Robertson at half-time, and Divock Origi were the heroes of the night, scoring the goals that secured Liverpool’s place in a second consecutive Champions League final, where they will play either Tottenham Hotspur or Ajax and go into the match as favourites.
Even given their history of comebacks, Anfield’s famous atmosphere and all the intangibles that inspired hope, nobody truly believed they would pull this off. But somehow, they did.
In his post-match interview, Jurgen Klopp was almost lost for words to summarise his emotions. The German coach described his players as “fucking talented giants”, heaping praise on his squad who defied the odds without two of their most important members: Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.
“The whole performance, the whole game was too much,” he said.
“It was overwhelming. Before the game I said it was impossible, but because it’s you [the players], we have a chance. I’ve watched so many football games in my life and I can’t remember a lot like this.
“You play against the best team in the world, you’re not allowed to concede and you have to score… Winning is already difficult, but winning with a clean sheet, I don’t know how we did it.”
BT Sport cut their video short before the F-bomb, but Klopp concluded his interview by saying:
“It’s 10.10pm and the children are probably in bed so I’m sorry about the language but can I say these boys are fucking talented giants. It’s all about the players.”
