Awkward
The Manchester United Player of the Season Awards for 2018/19 must have been a little bit underwhelming.
Despite that two-month spell after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was named caretaker manager, it’s been a thoroughly miserable season at Old Trafford. United will end it without silverware and without a spot in next season’s Champions League.
Still, despite all the doom and gloom, it’s an unwritten rule that you aren’t overly negative about things when speaking to the club’s in-house television station, MUTV.
Sadly, Geoffrey Boycott didn’t appear to get the memo.
The former England cricketer was a guest at the awards and was interviewed by MUTV’s Mark Sullivan.
Asked what Man United mean to him right now, Boycott began with the word “Disappointment”.
It didn’t get much better. Having described how the players had let the fans down, Boycott was then reminded that it was a rebuilding process under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He responded by pointing out how inexperienced Solskjaer was for the job.
“He doesn’t have a record of experience, does he?” he says. “He did a short time at Cardiff and then resigned honourably. He’s looked after a team in his home country, but it’s not the Premier League.”
The interview, in all its toe-curling glory, can be seen in full below.
I don’t think #mutv will be inviting Geoff Boycott back on anytime soon. Ffs Geoff! 😂 #mufc #MUFCPOTY pic.twitter.com/imBV8m7iVx
