A moving gesture

James Milner ordered Liverpool’s open top parade bus to make a stop at the house of a Hillsborough survivor on Sunday so that he could show him the European Cup.

As reported by the Liverpool ECHO, Milner, the club’s vice-captain, asked for the bus to stop at the home of Andrew Devine as the vehicle made its way back to the club’s Melwood training ground following the city centre parade on Sunday evening.

When the bus pulled up outside, shortly after 8pm, Milner leaned over the side to show him the trophy, which had been won in Madrid the previous day.

“It was a very kind gesture and it made Andrew’s day,” Andrew’s mother is quoted as telling the ECHO.

Andrew, now 53, was seriously injured at Hillsborough and has been confined to a wheelchair ever since.

The report explains how Andrew’s chest was crushed as he attended the FA Cup semi-final in 1989 as a 22-year-old. His brain was deprived of oxygen and he was put on a life support machine and given little chance of surviving more than a day.

He continues to live with his parents in the family home, 30 years on.

Milner, who came on as a second half substitute in Madrid on Sunday, has met Andrew in the past during his visits to Melwood.
