Ryan Sessegnon’s Fulham deal only has a year left
Ryan Sessegnon has refused to commit to a new contract at Fulham after the club were relegated to the Championship, paving the way for a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur, who have been interested in the player for some time.
Sessegnon, who plays as either a left-winger or left full-back, only has a year left on his contract at Craven Cottage, meaning he could be available for a knockdown fee this summer should the club not wish to lose him for nothing at the end of next season.
The 19-year-old had something of an underwhelming debut campaign in the Premier League, scoring only two goals in 30 appearances – a return that pales in comparison to his imperious 17/18 season, during which he scored 15 in 46 games and was named in the Championship team of the season as Fulham won promotion via the playoffs.
Sessegnon has made it clear in the past that he would be more than open to a move to Spurs, where he believes he would thrive under manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has an established track record of developing young English talent. Previously, the money Fulham were asking for the player – believed to be around £45 million – proved to be a major stumbling block for the move. This could now all change given the news from the player himself that he will not be signing a new deal.
He has, however, been linked to a host of top European clubs in the past, including Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, who will also no doubt be keeping an eye on the player as he represents England at the Under-21 European Championship in Italy and San Marino later this month.
Reportedly, Tottenham are happy to pay up to £25 million for the winger who, despite his young age, has over 100 professional senior appearances and 25 goals to his name. Fulham, now there hand has been forced, will be hard-pressed to find a better offer.
