“People get seriously injured”
Do you like cheese? You probably do, most people do. But do you like it enough to chase a wheel of it down an incredibly steep hill alongside dozens of other people?
The coronavirus pandemic has led to the cancellation of countless events across the world and the United Kingdom. Some are more public, like the NBA Finals, the Met Gala, and the Premier League.
Others, like the Gloucester Cheese Rolling, are a little more left-field. Held on the Spring Bank Holiday at Cooper’s Hill, near Gloucester, the first written evidence of the event dates back to 1826.
Even then it was referred to as an old tradition, and it has continued yearly since then. Competitors come from all over the world to chase the cheese (or a foam replica for safety reasons).
With this year’s event cancelled, we spoke to a man who not only survived the Roll, but then decided to make a film about it.
