January transfers don’t have the best track record for success
High-profile disappointments like Fernando Torres, Andy Carroll and Philippe Coutinho have, among many others, not helped the reputation of big money transfers completed in January.
But that didn’t stop Manchester United from nipping into the market and recruiting Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Club in Portugal. Fernandes had attracted United’s interest the previous summer, but they’d decided against it. This time they weren’t waiting about.
When he joined, United were 14 points behind Leicester City, and had just lost two games in a row. The season is now over, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side secured third place and the Champions League, four points ahead of the Foxes.
This is how the signing of the season transformed Manchester United’s campaign.
