Real Madrid’s Mariano Diaz has tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of their Champions League tie against Manchester City.

The 26-year-old is following protocol by self-isolating at home and is in “perfect health” despite the positive test, according to a statement from Real Madrid.

The UK government recently announced that British tourists returning from Spain would have to quarantine for two weeks upon their return. Real Madrid would not be subjected to this rule and that is unlikely to change given that Mariano has not made contact with his teammates for over a week.

Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane gave his players a whole week off after winning LaLiga and the players are today reuniting to train ahead of the resumption of the Champions League.

Tests will be carried out on the players every day and Diaz will miss out on the second leg of Madrid’s round of 16 tie against Man City, which will take place on August 7th.

Madrid lost the home leg 2-1 against Man City but are in excellent form and will back themselves to overcome that deficit in Manchester as they look to regain their European crown.
