Here it is, the most ridiculous last-minute winner you’re ever likely to see

Simon Lloyd

Shades of Benzema vs Karius, only much more spectacular

That’s it. We’ve found it: the silliest last-minute winner you’re ever likely to see, courtesy of our friends across the pond.

If we’re being honest, Wednesday’s USL Championship game between Hartford Athletic and Philadelphia Union II wasn’t really on our radar – even it did prove to be quite an eventful game.

Hartford had raced into a two-goal lead inside the first quarter of an hour in Philadelphia, only for the home side to get back on level terms in the second half.

As the final seconds ticked away, it looked for all the world as though the game would end in a 2-2 draw. With stoppage time looming, an overhit cross was taken in by the Philadelphia goalkeeper, who quickly looked to bowl the ball out to a teammate.

Step forward Danny Barrera, the hero of the hour. Standing on the edge of the area as the keeper looked to distribute the ball down the field, he instinctively stretched his right leg out behind him in the hope the ball might hit it as it was released. Sure enough, it did, looping up off his heel, over the goalkeeper’s head and into the empty goal with a single bounce.

Have a look. Shades of Karim Benzema and Loris Karius, only more spectacular:

The goal was enough to clinch the victory.
