Phil Neville is also in the running
Sol Campbell is being considered by Sheffield Wednesday for the vacant managerial position after Garry Monk was sacked by the Championship club, according to reports.
Campbell is currently available after leaving Southend United in June, when the coronavirus led to League One not being finished and the Essex club being relegated, rock bottom of the table.
Campbell does however have some credit in the bank from his time at Macclesfield Town before their expulsion from the EFL. Having taken over with the club five points adrift of safety, Campbell inspired a resurgence and helped the club avoid relegation with a 1-1 draw on the final day of the season.
Phil Neville, currently manager of the England Women’s team, is also in the running, according to Sky Sports. The Lionesses boss’ contract with England runs out in July and will not be extended, with the former Manchester United and Everton full-back eyeing a move into club football.
If he were to be appointed Wednesday boss, he would be expected to sacrifice his role as manager of Great Britain’s women at the Tokyo Olympics next year.
Other managers in the running for the job at Hillsborough include Paul Cook and Tony Pulis, who boast more experience in the Championship than both Campbell and Neville.
Wednesday are currently second bottom in the Championship, with just one win in their last five matches. The Owls have won three games this season, drawing another three, but remain in the relegation zone after they were handed a six point deduction for breaking EFL rules.
Former Wednesday and Swansea boss Carlos Carvalhal told Sky Sports a new manager must be afforded patience by the fans and the club.
“If we choose a manager and we lose the confidence of the manager – I’m talking about the fans, the owner, the people around, and don’t give time to a manager it will be impossible that Sheffield Wednesday will go to the Premier League in the next seasons,” the Portuguese said.
“They must find a path, choose someone with a good project and follow that personality and trust 100 per cent in the manager. This is the way.”
