Tactics Tim strikes again
Liverpool snatched all three points right at the death on Wednesday night, finally breaking through a resilient Tottenham backline at a corner. Roberto Firmino lost his marker – some would say with some unlawful help from Jordan Henderson – and headed Andy Robertson’s cross past Hugo Lloris to put Liverpool back at the top of the Premier League.
The entire midweek round of games was being broadcast on Amazon Prime, which meant the streaming service also put on its own Soccer Saturday/Sport Score/Goal Show alternative, featuring none other than Tim Sherwood. Tactics Tim. Tim ‘It’s not a gilet, it’s a coat’ Sherwood.
The former Spurs manager was talking the panel through the last few minutes of the game, when Liverpool won this corner. Now, what do you say in this situation? You might mention Liverpool’s aerial threat, how Spurs have broadly looked comfortable defending crosses, and then just say what happens. Not Tim. Tim says: “I’m not too worried about this corner,” immediately realising what he’s done, adding: “that might come back to bite me,” precisely about five seconds before it comes back to bite him.
“I think Tottenham have got the dominancy in the air, you know.” That is, in all fairness, a very fair observation. But, when it comes back to bite him literally seconds later, you can’t help but laugh.
But the real beauty comes in the timing of his last line.
“I’m not sure anyone can get their head on the first ball for Liverpool, apart from that one.”

His comic timing was greeted by a shocked laughter in the studio, as Firmino wheeled away in celebration.
Say what you want about Tim Sherwood. The man never fails to entertain.
