Mohamed Salah hits out at inconsistency of VAR across competitions

The man is back in top, top form

Mohamed Salah is back in the goals. The Liverpool striker – not winger, regardless what some Twitter users say – scored two stunning goals as the Reds defeated West Ham 3-1 at the London Stadium.

The two goals were a return to Premier League form for the Egyptian striker, who – alongside his teammates – had struggled to find the net in recent weeks.

Speaking after the game, Salah was asked about his run of games in the Premier League – six without a goal – which included a narrowly disallowed goal against Spurs last week.

He interjected, offering a very frank and pretty fair assessment of his dislike of video technology, and crucially, the inconsistency across competitions.

“I said before, I don’t like VAR! From the beginning of the season, in my opinion it’s killing the game; the joy of football,” the 28-year-old told Sky Sports.

“Here, you have to be in exactly the same line [with offside decisions]. But I think in the Champions League or some other countries, they give the striker more space to… if they score, it’s fine for them.

“I don’t want to complain about it, because I don’t want to get fined. But my opinion about VAR? I don’t like it.”

With his goal against the Hammers, Salah became the first Liverpool player to score more than 20 goals in four consecutive seasons since Ian Rush did it on six occasions rom 1981/82 to 1986/87.
