Morgan quit GMB on Tuesday evening
Piers Morgan has walked away from his role as host of Good Morning Britain, ITV confirmed on Tuesday evening.
In a statement, the channel said:
“Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain.”
“ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”
The news came following distasteful comments made by the polemicist in chief regarding Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.
After their interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which Markle opened up about experiencing suicidal thoughts during her lowest moments in Britain, Morgan said he “didn’t believe a word she said.”
He has always been one to push the boundaries and generate headlines during his time on the show, but this proved a bridge too far, as widespread condemnation followed.
Good Morning Britain is ITV’s flagship morning news programme, and runs in direct competition with BBC Breakfast.
Morgan has therefore had a long running beef with BBC host Dan Walker on Twitter, about viewing figures. It’s all quite embarrassing and twee.
Walker’s response to Morgan quitting GMB came in two parts: Firstly with a surprised emoji, in a tweet quoting his earlier comments, in which he said: “I hope my boss would have dragged me off set if I’d used my platform – on national TV – to tell a pregnant woman, speaking openly about suicidal thoughts, that I didn’t believe a word she said.”

Walker then followed up with a more sincere offering of commiseration, before inviting him onto the BBC to speak about the episode.

Presumably, Piers will respond saying it would boost their ratings.
