Man Utd set to hand David De Gea huge pay-off to leave

De Gea will reportedly leave Old Trafford this summer

David De Gea’s days at Manchester United appear numbered, with fresh reports claiming the Spaniard will leave Old Trafford this summer.

De Gea, who joined United from Atletico Madrid a decade ago, has seen his position as the club’s number one come under threat from Dean Henderson in recent weeks.

Now, according to a report in the Mirror, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to stick with Henderson as the club look ahead to next season, with De Gea deemed surplus to requirements.

The problem, as far as United are concerned, is that De Gea still has two years to run on his £350,000-a-week contract, meaning the club must pay up some of his remaining wages before he departs.

The report also adds that United value him at £50m, a fee which they will do well to get in the current financial climate.

Where he goes next also appears unclear. Having come agonisingly close to joining Real Madrid several years ago, the Spanish champions have since signed Thibaut Courtois as their first choice goalkeeper.

A return to former club Atletico also seems highly unlikely, with Jan Oblak well established as first choice.

United also seem likely to part company with Sergio Romero who appeared certain to leave last summer, only for a last-minute move to Everton to fall through. The Argentine international was also linked with moves to MLS and Boca Juniors but has remained a United player – despite reportedly bidding farewell to teammates earlier this year.

Lee Grant, currently United’s third choice, is also set to become a free agent this summer, as is Joel Pereira, who is on loan at Huddersfield.
