The World Cup winner has only played six times for the club
Shkodran Mustafi’s nightmare spell at Schalke looks like it will soon be at an end after reports have emerged of the German centre back falling out with manager Dimitrios Grammozis. According to German publication Bild, Mustafi may have played his last game for the club already, and was not included in Schalke’s matchday squad at the weekend as a result of the clash.
Mustafi left Arsenal in January after having being released from his contract at the Gunners, and went to Schalke in search of first team action, however he’s managed to join arguably the worst club in any of the top five European leagues.
Schalke sit bottom of the Bundesliga, with just 10 points, having won just one game from their 27 they’ve played this season, and conceding a quite frankly ridiculous 71 goals so far this campaign. They have sacked four managers this season.
The German has only made six appearances for the club since arriving in January, failing to win any of them.
However despite this nightmare spell for him, it seems he won’t be short of offers come the summer. His contract at Schalke only runs until the end of the season, so if he is not offered another (as seems likely) he’ll be a free agent.
In January, there was interest in him from clubs in Serie A, a league that the German defender is already familiar with having previously played for Sampdoria.
There’s no doubt that the last couple of years have seen Mustafi’s career go from bad to worse though, and the last few months at Schalke really represent rock bottom for him. In 2016 Arsenal signed him from Valencia for a whopping £35 million. It’s difficult to see a club paying even a tenth of that now.
