Manchester United forged a fearsome reputation on their ruthless brand of attacking football.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s sides were famous for being able to put rivals to the sword with devastating ease from the first minute to the last.
Their never-say-die attacking philosophy has thrown up some incredible football moments down the years – not least the Champions League final in 1999 when stoppage-time goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær gave them a historic 2-1 win over Bayern Munich.
These famous victories have always been spurred on by the iconic ‘Attack! Attack! Attack’ chant from the Old Trafford terraces.
But this season with some lacklustre performances and 0-0 stalemates led by a misfiring Wayne Rooney, this has been sung more out of frustration by the United faithful.
However one of Louis van Gaal’s top performers this season Chris Smalling believes that if United win silverware this season fans will soon forget about this mantra.
While goals haven’t exactly been flowing for United of late, Smalling and co are not leaking goals at the other end and are currently on an impressive run of five consecutive clean sheets.
This is what the England defender said to BT Sport about United’s most sacred mantra…
.@ChrisSmalling insists people will forget about singing "Attack! Attack! Attack!" if @ManUtd can secure silverware. https://t.co/VBw0dqdvfz
