The former 007 has thrown in with every man and his dog by suggesting the same two most commonly touted names to be the next Bond
Pierce Brosnan has given his seal of approval for either Idris Elba or Tom Hardy to become the next James Bond. Yeah, him and virtually everyone else under the sun.
Elba and Hardy are two of the names that have most commonly been suggested to take on the role, with Daniel Craig definitely making this one – No Time to Die – his last as the iconic spy.
Speaking to People magazine, Brosnan reluctantly answered the age-old question, admitting that it does sometimes become “wearisome” to be asked it over and over again.
Nevertheless, he did answer, saying that “Idris Elba comes to mind. Idris is such a powerful presence and such a great former voice tensity. He would be magnificent. There’s Tom Hardy out there as well. Tom can really chew the furniture up, just be a ball boy – both men can.”
He went on to say that Brosnan added: “Daniel [Craig] has left such an indelible footprint, they can go in many different ways. But your guess is as good as mine, who’s going to be the next Bond. There’s no other franchise like it. Nothing.”
For many, especially the younger generation, Craig has become the iconic James Bond; the 53-year-old, along with the arrival of Sam Mendes for Skyfall, brought a level of grit and darkness to the role.
Pierce Brosnan was, arguably, the last of the more tongue in cheek Bond films; the upcoming film, which is now set for a September 30th release date after multiple delays, is set to see the same serious tone carried over but with a return of all the glorious gadgets and glorious espionage tropes that the series is known for.
Regardless of who takes up the mantle next, one thing is for sure, we’ve had a pretty good so far and we dare say with a British cinema institution like Bond, the powers that be will make sure they pick someone fit for the task.
Craig’s final appearance will be a bittersweet one but we can’t wait.
