The 18-year-old was injured seconds before he was due to be substituted

Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott had to leave the field on a stretcher during his side’s game with Leeds after picking up what appeared to be a serious injury on Sunday afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp was preparing to substitute the 18-year-old for Jordan Henderson after watching his side take a 2-0 lead early in the second half, when Elliott was grounded after a challenge from Pascal Struijk on the halfway line.

The severity of the situation immediately became clear as Mo Salah, who was close by at the time of the challenge, frantically waved for medical attention.

As Elliott was tended to by his club’s medical team, Struijk was shown a red card by referee Craig Pawson after a VAR review – despite the injury seeming unfortunate more than the result of anything malicious.

The teenager was seen taking oxygen as he left the field on the stretcher.
