Kevin De Bruyne escapes red card for late tackle and Man Utd fans are fuming

Many have pointed out that Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off for an identical challenge last week

Kevin De Bruyne has had a lucky escape as he avoided a red card following a late challenge on Idrissa Gueye during Manchester City’s Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

City were trailing 1-0 at the time of the incident, after Gueye’s close-range finish into the top corner put the French side ahead. However, De Bruyne’s late tackle has caused plenty of controversy amongst opposition fanbases online – none more so than direct rivals – Manchester United.

Supporters of the Red Devils are claiming that De Bruyne’s less than pretty challenge was no different to Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s a week before, which saw him sent off against Young Boys in United’s surprise 2-1 defeat a fortnight ago and have taken to social media to voice their anger.

The challenge on Gueye thankfully wasn’t enough to force the midfielder off injured, and despite a lengthy look with VAR, it came to the conclusion that De Bruyne was in the clear and wouldn’t see his night cut short either.

Whilst some believed it was a straight red, others shared their frustrations with the referring, implying that they need to be more consistent when making decisions on tackles like this.

The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell claimed it was in fact worse than Wan-Bissaka’s challenge.

At the time of writing, Manchester City have had chances to equalise at the Parc de Princes stadium, going close through Raheem Sterling who hit the crossbar with a well-timed header before Bernardo Silva squandered a glorious opportunity from yards out, only to hit the crossbar as well.

PSG meanwhile have looked to capitalise on their lead, with Achraf Hakimi and Kylian Mbappe linking up well on the right-hand side to cause Pep Guardiola’s side several problems.
