‘I’m very happy to destroy his perfect world.’

The manager of Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol has fired back at comments made by former Liverpool and Holland international Dirk Kuyt following a famous night at the Santiago Bernabeu which saw Real Madrid beaten 2-1 in the Champions League by Sheriff.

On what was probably the biggest night in the history of the club, manager Yuriy Vernydub wanted to use his post-match press conference to remind Kuyt of some certain comments he made about the club after their qualification to the group stages.

Kuyt had expressed his doubts about the champions of Moldova, who currently top a group also containing Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk, questioning whether they really deserved to be in the Champions League at all.

Speaking on Dutch channel RTL 7, the 41-year-old said: “I know that the Champions League is a competition for champions, but teams like Sheriff Tiraspol have nothing to do with the Champions League.”

How silly does Kuyt look now?

Vernydub clearly didn’t forget what was said and was keen to remind Kuyt that his team aren’t just here to make up the numbers. He said: “It was a great player, Dirk Kuyt, who said there is no place in the Champions League for Sheriff.

“So I’m very happy to destroy his perfect world.

“At the moment, I am very happy after this game against such a big club like Real Madrid. This is so emotional.

“I’m very appreciate of my boys for this great job. We are a real team.

“Some big name players said before there’s no place in the Champions League for a team like Sheriff, but it’s our place and we proved it.”
