Would you like to see more of Phoenix’s Joker?
Joaquin Phoenix has teased a potential Joker sequel in a recent interview. The film split opinion when it dropped back in 2019 but rumours of a follow-up have been circulating ever since.
Speaking to Playlist, Phoenix was asked if there had been any movement around the idea of a Joker 2, to which he replied: “I mean, I dunno. From when we were shooting, we started to —you know, uhh, this is an interesting guy. There are some things we could do with this guy and could explore further. But as to whether we actually will? I don’t know.”
Last year, it was reported that the 46-year-old had been offered a “staggering amount of money” to make not one but two sequels.
Nevertheless, we have heard little else up until now about a potential continuation of this version of the iconic Batman villain – other than fans of the film crying out for more.
The movie – which acted as director Todd Phillips‘ real dramatic debut after cutting his teeth with comedies like The Hangover series, Due Date and Starsky & Hutch – caused controversy at the time, as many feared it was fetishising anarchism and violence. However plenty others still revere it for Phoenix’s powerful performance as the tortured soul who became the Joker.
Part of the problem was that many felt the first film was just another gritty take on the character, heavily influenced by iconic filmmaker Martin Scorsese (who had even considered producing the movie at one point) and packed with themes that were fairly generalised and nondescript.
Would you like to see a Joker sequel or is this particular version of the infamous DC character better left as a standalone?
