England’s World Cup qualifier against Andorra to go ahead despite fire

The game will go ahead

Andorra have confirmed that tomorrow night’s match against England will go ahead, despite a fire breaking out at the Estadi Nacional stadium earlier today.

It is thought that the fire was caused as a result of somebody welding a metal structure at the stadium prior to tomorrow’s Group I clash between Andorra and the Three Lions.

The area affected by the fire is the commentary gantry, but it also appeared that the pitchside VAR monitor was on fire.

Firefighters were quickly in attendance and were able to contain the fire, and it is has been confirmed that nobody had been injured as a result of the incident, with England’s players and staff at their hotel whilst the fire broke out.

Understandably, there was speculation around whether the game would be cancelled or not, but it appears that the game will go ahead as normal.

A spokesperson ahead of Andorra’s press conference said: “No personal harm has been reported, only material damage.

“The schedule will continue as planned and the match will go ahead.”
