A lot can change in five years
Friday marked five years since Gareth Southgate’s first game in charge of the England senior team. In that half-decade, he has overseen the rebuilding of a team whom he picked up at one of its all time lows – the defeat to Iceland in 2016, proceeded by the scandal that saw Sam Allardyce sacked after just one game.
A lot has changed since then. New stars have emerged, old ones have been phased out, penalty demons have been exorcised, and England reached a major final for the first time since 1966.
So to mark the occasion, we’ve put together a quiz to see how well you remember the shambles that he inherited.
All you have to do is name all eleven starters from his first game in charge, against Malta in 2016.
You have five minutes.
