His teammate had some words of advice for the talented youngster
Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels has warned his teammate Erling Haaland that a move away from the club may not be the best option for the Norwegian following continuous reports which have linked Haaland with a transfer away from the Bundesliga side.
The 21-year-old has gone from strength to strength since he joined Dortmund back in January 2020, scoring 68 goals in 67 games and is a player in-demand, with strong interest coming from all the big clubs in Europe including the Premier League – in particular – Manchester United and Manchester City.
But Hummels, who departed Dortmund for Bayern Munich back in 2016 before returning three years later, warned the coveted star that leaving for pastures new may not necessarily be the right decision.
Speaking to Sport Bild, he said: “I would fully understand him wanting to stay because things are really great in Dortmund, because he knows what he has here. I have far from given up hope that he will stay for a long time.
“The grass is not always greener on the other side. You really have to be aware of that in football.
“It’s worth a lot if you have a good environment, feel comfortable with the guys and can also be really successful.
“You have to value that, that’s not a given at every club. So we have a lot to offer to Erling.”
Haaland’s release clause – which is estimated to be around the £68 million mark – will be activated next season and is almost certain to cause a transfer war, with clubs around the continent battling to get his signature
Despite their desire to keep him as part of their plans, Dortmund chief Hans-Joachime Watzke admitted that they will face a difficult task to keep him.
Watzke told Sport1: “It has not yet been decided if he will leave next summer. We’ll see.
“Of course it will be difficult. I am not saying, however, that it is completely out of the question.
“We’ll do everything we can to keep our top players loyal to us in the future.”
