“That’s almost a sackable offence in itself.”
Danny Mills believes Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have committed a ‘sackable offence’ by trying to convert Jadon Sancho into a wing-back.
United signed Sancho from Borussia Dortmund for £73million in the summer, with the Red Devils finally securing a deal for the England international after the failing the previous year.
However, the 21-year-old’s start to his Old Trafford career hasn’t quite gone to plan, with Sancho failing to score or assist in 13 games for United.
The youngster has started just six games since his move from Germany, featuring for just 564 minutes so far this campaign.
His poor form has seen him drop to the bench in recent weeks, but reports have suggested that a change in position could be in the pipeline.
It is believed that he could be brought back into the fold in an unfamiliar right wing-back system, replacing Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Despite this, former Manchester City and England defender Danny Mills thinks the decision to try and train the winger to play as a wing-back is a ‘sackable offence’.
“Good luck turning him into a wing-back!” he told Football Insider.
“He didn’t play for England too much in the Euros because I don’t think he was reliable enough to track back and do the defensive side of it. Dortmund never played him there.
“You bought a winger who is going to create chances and score goals. Suddenly you’re going to play him at wing-back in an unbelievably leaky defence. It’s like, really?
“That’s almost a sackable offence in itself.”
Mills labelled the idea as ‘ridiculous’, using Cristiano Ronaldo’s heading ability to further argue his point.
“Shall we put Cristiano Ronaldo at centre-half because he can head a ball? I think Ronaldo can head the ball better than the centre-halves at the moment so should they put him at centre-half?
“It’s more than a little bit ridiculous.”
Sancho was recently dropped from Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Three Lions’ final two World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino.
