Charlie Savage made his professional debut for Manchester United on Wednesday night
It was an emotional night for the Savage family at Old Trafford on Wednesday night as Robbie Savage was able to commentate on his son Charlie’s professional debut.
The youngster was named amongst the substitutes for United’s final Champions League group game against Young Boys as Ralf Rangnick decided to make several changes to the side after they had already qualified for the knockout stages.
The home side took the lead through a speculative Mason Greenwood before Donny van de Beek’s loose pass fell into the path of Fabian Rieder, who rifled home from 25 yards just before half-time.
With the score poised at 1-1, Rangnick decided to give Savage, as well as highly-rated youngster Zidane Iqbal. who became the first British South Asian player to play for United, their professional debuts.

And it proved to be an emotional moment for father Robbie, who was at Old Trafford to talk through a proud moment for him and the rest of his family as he watched his son make his debut.
He said: “I’m starting to tear up.
“He’s achieved so much in his young life now.
“He’s never been top of the group, he’s always had to meet targets every two years when he was on the borderline and if he was going to be kept on.
“His application, his work ethic, his desire, he’s humble, that has got him to where he is.”

As Charlie entered the pitch, it was hard not to have a smile on your face as you hear Robbie speak.
“What a proud day for my boy…” Robbie said during the commentary.
The 18-year-old was able to have a few touches of the ball as he played the final few minutes of the game, but couldn’t help United to find the winner as they were held to a stalemate.
