Frank has said he believes the Premier League now need to intervene as clubs battle a surge in Covid cases

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has called for all Premier League fixtures to be postponed this weekend in response to a series of Covid outbreaks at a number of the top flight’s clubs.

Frank was told during his press conference that 13 of his Brentford side have now returned positive tests, with the United Kingdom recording its highest ever number of new Covid cases in a single day on Wednesday.

“First and foremost, we think as a club that the Premier League and every club should be much more open about how many cases we have,” the Dane said on Thursday morning.

“We think that we should postpone the full round of Premier League games for this weekend coming up,” he added. “The Covid cases are going through the roof in all the Premier League clubs. Everyone is dealing with it, everyone has a problem at this moment in time.

“To postpone this round, and also the Carabao Cup round, would give everyone a week at least to clean everything at the training grounds. It would break the chain in every club.”

Brentford’s game with Manchester United was called off on Tuesday night due to an outbreak of the virus which saw United’s Carrington training complex closed. The news that more United players had returned positive tests after returning to training on Wednesday has cast doubts over whether their game with Brighton on Saturday can be played.

Burnley’s game with Watford at Turf Moor was also called off on Wednesday for the same reason, with pressure growing on the Premier League to make a firm decision on the crisis.
