Emma Hayes’ side have exited the Champions League
Chelsea Women have been knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage by Wolfsburg.
Emma Hayes’ side exited the competition on goal difference, with Juventus progressing to the knockout stages by possessing the better goal record.
With Juventus winning their fixture against Servette 3-0, the Blues would have progressed to the next round as long as they lost by just one goal against Wolfsburg.
However, the German outfit were relentless and found themselves 4-0 up – with Chelsea’s hope of qualifying for the knockout stages slipping further away as each goal went in.
Svenja Huth opened the scoring for the home side in the 16th minute with a smart finish, and quickly grabbed her second in the 23rd.
With Chelsea knowing that they needed to score at least once, Hayes’ team pushed forward in search of the vital goal.
This played into the hand of Stephan Lerch’s side, who continued to dominate proceedings – scoring their third goal of the game in the 59th minute courtesy of Tabea Waßmuth.
Wolfsburg get another. 😔

Waßmuth completed the rout with just over 10 minutes to go as it became clear that the Blues’ hopes of Champions League glory were over for another year.
Chelsea will feel unlucky not to have progressed, especially considering that they finished on the same points as both Wolfsburg and Juventus in their group.
The Blues are now winless in three matches after suffering a shock defeat to Reading in their last league match.
However, they are still going strong in the Women’s Super League – currently sitting in second position, six points behind leaders Arsenal.
Hayes’ side host West Ham – who are in seventh position – in their next WSL match, hoping to bounce back from the disappointment of exiting Europe’s premier competition.
