He was the first Black actor to win a Best Actor Oscar
Hollywood legend Sidney Poitier has sadly passed away at the age of 94.
Born in America, the iconic actor grew up in the Bahamas and held dual citizenship, but returned to America when he was 15 before embarking on a long and decorated acting career.
Poitier was the first Black actor to win Best Actor at the Oscars for his performance in Lilies of the Field back in 1963. He was also given an Honorary Academy Award for his contribution to American cinema in 2002.
Known for performances in Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, In the Heat of the Night, To Sir, with Love and many more, he retired from the profession in 2001 but has left a lasting impact on the industry.
