Netflix has officially signed on to make the live-action He-Man movie, the first film in over 35 years. We’re screaming so loud entire generation can hear.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project – previously helmed by Sony – will be directed by the Nee brothers (The Lost City) and use their screenplay written with David Callaham, the man behind Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings‘ script.
Using the original title from the 80s film and TV series, Master of the Universe, the story is believed to revolve around the original lore: Adam, a.k.a. He-Man, discovers he is a prince and destined to be the saviour of a far-away land, Eternia.
Played by Dolph Lundgren the first time around, West Side Story‘s Kyle Allen is now set to don the furry shorts and iconic chest piece; it remains to be seen who will play the IP’s central antagonist, Skeletor.
In association with Mattel, who still own the rights to the IP’s toys and entertainment ventures, production on the film is due to start this summer, although there is no rumoured released date at this early stage.
While the film will launch on Netflix, Sony will retain theatrical release and streaming rights to the film in China, as Netflix does not currently operate in the country.
The world’s most popular streaming already brought the franchise back with an animated series, Masters of the Universe: Revelation in 2021, having already completed its second season (split into two parts) in November.
80’s kids and anyone lucky enough to watch this show during their youth are no doubt over the moon that the live-action reboot is finally on its way.
