Roma recently employed a former referee as an external consultant
Roma are reportedly the subject of a bizarre investigation by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) after an employee illegally confronted referee Rosario Abisso after a match.
The Giallorossi recently employed former Serie A referee Gianpaolo Calvarese as an external consultant to help José Mourinho’s side deal with officiating and VAR protocol.
While his appointment was meant to help prevent refereeing controversy, it seems to have backfired – with Calvarese now thought to be under investigation for an incident in Roma’s 0-0 draw with Genoa on February 5.
As reported by Italian news outlet Il Tempo, the FIGC have opened a case against Roma and Calvarese’s role at the Stadio Olympico after he illegally confronted referee Abisso after the game.
The incident occurred after Nicolo Zaniolo was sent off, with Calvarese alleged to have entered the match officials’ dressing room seeking clarity over the decision.
With the officials’ changing room completely off limits to anyone except for the club’s staff member responsible for referee relations, Calvarese’s interference could lead to the Giallorossi being handed a fine and suspensions for management members.
However, the report adds that the FIGC Prosecutor’s Office is yet to inform the club about the proceeding.
Roma appointed Calvarese – who had been working as a match analyst for Amazon Prime Italia’s coverage of the Champions League – after repeatedly complaining about refereeing decisions in the first half to the campaign.
As well as working with the men’s senior squad, Calvarese is helping the women’s team and the Primavera youth side in their academy, having retired at the end of last season.
