The forward was struck during United’s celebrations
Anthony Elanga was struck by a missile as Manchester United celebrated their third goal against Leeds United on Sunday.
The Swedish attacker replaced Jesse Lingard in the 68th minute with the Red Devils having thrown away their two-goal lead against Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
United took the lead in the first-half through captain Harry Maguire’s header, before doubling their lead just before the break courtesy of Bruno Fernandes’ header in added-time.
However, the home side scored two goals in quick succession to level proceedings. Rodrigo Moreno’s attempted cross caught out Red Devils goalkeeper David de Gea by looping over his head and into the net.
Less than a minute later, former United forward Dan James did well to set-up Leeds substitute Raphinha for a tap-in to make it 2-2.
Ralf Rangnick’s side regained control of the tie and made it 3-2 in the 70th minute when substitute Fred finished off a well-worked move with a smart finish.
While United’s players were celebrating, 19-year-old Elanga was struck by, what appeared to be, a coin. The attacker fell to the ground before quickly getting back to his feet and walking back towards the centre circle.
Elanga got himself on the scoresheet in the 88th minute when Fernandes set-up the 19-year-old, the forward stroked his effort through the legs of Leeds shot-stopper Illan Meslier to seal a 4-2 victory for United.
After United’s victory was confirmed, the winger then took the chance to give a bit back to the Leeds fans, as he pointed towards the club crest on his shirt.
