Promes is facing a charge of attempted murder
Dutch international Quincy Promes had his phone tapped by police over a suspected involvement with drug trafficking and organised crime, a report in his homeland has revealed.
It was announced last week that the Spartak Moscow forward, who played for his country at the European Championships last summer, is to be charged with attempted murder relating to the stabbing of his cousin in July 2020. His cousin was stabbed in the leg but survived.
Despite initially denying the stabbing, which took place after a dispute at a family party, new evidence has shown the 30-year-old admitting to the crime in wire-tapped phone conversations.
The Public Prosecution Service had responded that they “do not want to go into that now” when asked why Promes’ phone was being tapped in the first place.
According to De Telegraaf, however, police were monitoring the former Ajax player’s phone over suspicions he was linked to a a drug trafficking network.
Relatives of the player were incarcerated for drug trafficking and money laundering relating to the same case, with the report also saying that Promes’ nephew would make weekly calls to the footballer from inside prison.
Promes and family members allegedly invested a significant amount of money in a 4,000-kilo batch of cocaine, only for the shipment to be intercepted in Antwerp in April 2020. The drugs had a wholesale value of €120m (£100m), though their street value is said to have been significantly higher.
It was announced last week that the Public Prosecution Service in Amsterdam would be prosecuting Promes for the attempted murder of his cousin.
He had previously been charged with attempted manslaughter or aggravated assault, but transcripts of tapped conversations showed Promes wanted to stab his cousin to death.
