Shocking scenes after the full-time whistle

Real Oviedo goalkeeper Joan Femenias appeared to be targeted by several Sporting Gijon players in the aftermath of their match on Saturday.

Oviedo secured a 1-0 victory over Gijon in the Asturias derby thanks to an own goal from Juan Berrocal, with the away side moving up to sixth in LaLiga SmartBank.

However, their result in the tense clash was marred by shocking scenes as a number of Gijon players were seen confronting the Oviedo goalkeeper after the full-time whistle.

Femenias targeted by Sporting Gijon players

Femenias was standing near the edge of his penalty area while his teammates celebrated the win at the other end of the pitch, before he appeared to exchange words with an opposition player.

Then, one of Gijon’s players ran over to the shot-stopper and pushed him in the shoulder with his chest.

The situation began to escalate as seven more players surrounded Femenias, before they shoved him back towards his own goal. After this, some of Gijon’s players appeared to hit the Oviedo goalkeeper.

Gijon midfielder Gaspar Campos was able to remove his rival from the situation as the players were eventually separated.

Oviedo boss ‘understands the anger of Sporting’

While it remains unclear what sparked the incident after the derby clash, Oviedo boss Jose Angel ‘Cuco’ Ziganda apologised if the Gijon players felt ‘offended’ by his side’s celebrations.

However, the Spaniard also insisted that ‘when you win you want to celebrate in an effusive manner and the loser feels frustrated.’

He said: “I understand the anger of Sporting but also the joy of ours.”

Oviedo’s victory was vital in their playoff hopes, while the defeat leaves Gijon down in 17th position.
