Maguire was given 72 hours to quit United by crazed ‘fan’
A Manchester United ‘fan’ reportedly told club captain Harry Maguire that bombs would be detonated at his home if he did not leave the club within 72 hours.
Maguire has been the subject of intense scrutiny from some elements of United’s support in recent weeks, with the club enduring a nightmarish season.
Earlier this week, however, things took a significantly more sinister turn, with Maguire’s agent receiving an email threatening to detonate explosive devices at the defender’s home.
Police searched home of Maguire after bomb threat
According to The Sun, Maguire had been at United’s training complex at the time and quickly returned home to be with his fiancee and two young children.
On Wednesday police conducted a thorough search of the England international’s property with sniffer dogs but nothing was found. The 29-year-old has reportedly moved in with a teammate since the threat was made.
A Cheshire police spokesperson said: “No evacuation has taken place but as a precautionary measure, a police explosive’s dog has attended the address this afternoon (Thursday April 21) to conduct a search of the gardens and surrounding area.”
A source also told The Sun that Maguire, along with his United teammates, regularly received death threats.
“This was taken very seriously,” the source is quoted as saying. “Harry and his teammates regularly receive death threats on social media but this was different.
“The email said three bombs had been planted at his home. He had 72 hours to leave United or they’d be detonated. It was dripping with hatred and abuse.”
Maguire not expected to feature for United this weekend
Despite a spokesperson saying that Maguire was willing to play this weekend, he is not expected to feature for United during their Premier League meeting with Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday afternoon.
