You’ll Never Walk Alone…

Liverpool could become the first Premier League side to have a cryptocurrency firm as a shirt sponsor from as early as 2024.

The Reds’ current £40m-a-year deal with Standard Chartered expires in May 2023 and Liverpool are keen to find a new deal if they cannot agree to extend their partnership.

If a deal is to be completed, it would be the first of its kind

With that, the Merseyside club are looking at alternative options and according to The Athletic, companies from the cryptocurrency firm are among those being considered.

Other firms also include companies working within electronics, media and tourism, however the crypto exchange firm could emerge as the frontrunner.

Although several top-flight clubs have signed deals with cryptocurrency firms in the past year, no side has ever featured one as their main shirt sponsor.

The move is likely to be controversial given the environment concerns surrounding the blockchain. The sector isn’t regulated and given that cryptocurrency can be bought and exchanged for financial gains or losses, can be seen as a risk to fans.

If an agreement is reached, it is believed that it would bring in more than £70m across two seasons, however fans have reportedly not been consulted.

Liverpool received backlash for launching a series of NFTs in March

Liverpool received backlash from their own supporters in March after the club launched a series of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), with the club acknowledging supporters’ disapproval.

The Reds still remain in the hunt to win a historic quadruple after their 2-0 win against local rivals Everton on Sunday. Goals from Andy Robertson and Divock Origi ensured they trail league leaders Manchester City by a point.

They can also win both the FA Cup and Champions League to add to their League Cup success in February.
