The Manchester United squad don’t look like they want to save Louis van Gaal, says Alan Shearer

With speculation continuing to mount around Louis van Gaal’s tenure at Manchester United, Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer has had his say on the Dutchman’s future.

Writing in The Sun, Shearer believes Van Gaal could soon jump ship at Old Trafford following tell-tale signs that the players are no longer putting in the required effort.

And the former England international also thinks United should waste no time in approaching Jose Mourinho if they slip up at home to Chelsea on Monday.

‘Was that the performance of a team trying to save their manager? No, it wasn’t,’ said Shearer.

‘If that was the best they can do then Van Gaal has no chance.

‘In truth, Stoke gave them a lesson, as did Bournemouth and Norwich — a lesson in desire. Manchester United play a brand of the game their fans simply do not recognise.

‘Whoever takes over from Van Gaal — and it looks like being a matter of when and not if — they have a very big job on their hands.’

Van Gaal hinted that he could resign if United go an eighth consecutive match without victory on Monday, but Ed Woodward has reportedly encouraged him to remain in charge.
