Auxerre are set to relieve Jean Marc-Furlan of his duties

French side Auxerre are set to sack their manager Jean Marc-Furlan after he showed the middle finger to opposition fans during their game against Clermont.

LÉquipe reported that Furlan had been dismissed due to the incident, as well as poor performances on the pitch, leaving Auxerre 16th in Ligue 1.

Furlan was caught showing the middle finger to Clermont fans on two separate occasions and even justified his decision in his post-match conference on Sunday, claiming that he is ‘quite violent when it comes to football.’

“I went to the referee because I didn’t think there were enough fouls for us. When I stood up, the crowd insulted me, so I turned around and flipped them off. As a result, the ref sent me off,” the 64-year-old said.

“You don’t know me. Because if you knew me, you would see that I have no brain. I am quite violent in my behaviour when it comes to football. Do I regret this attitude? No not at all.

“The sanction will probably be very heavy but it doesn’t matter: you do your work during the week, not on the bench. If there are 8,000 people there, you can shout all you want, but nobody hears you.”

Meanwhile the French side later distanced themselves from Furlan’s comments, insisting that his actions do “not align with the values of respect and fair-play which the club has always advocated for and extolled.”

Auxerre also offered an apology to Clermont fans for the behaviour. The French side have yet to officially confirm his departure.
