How Man United fans reacted when Van Gaal was first appointed as manager

JOE

This makes fascinating reading in hindsight.

You’d assume that Man United fans were cock-a-hoop at the appointment of Louis van Gaal back in 2014. They’d just endured a bitterly disappointing season under David Moyes, and Van Gaal was fresh from his heroics at the World Cup.

Looking back, you’d expect that this would be a chance to mock United fans for their misguided joy and giddiness about securing the Dutchman’s services. Not so, it seems. In fact there was more than a little doubt about the appointment.

Here’s a cross-section of tweets that show how the Old Trafford faithful greeted the news.

There was understandable optimism…

Some tempered hope…

Quite a number had another man in mind…

Many hoped for a return to attacking football…

But just as many were far from convinced…
