Trent Alexander-Arnold starts in new position for England

Harry Warner

This is sure to please England fans…

Trent Alexander-Arnold will start tonight in a new position for England as the Three Lions play their fourth Nations League match of the year.

The Liverpool star is known as one of the best right-backs in the world, however, has struggled to ever be given a full run of games starting in his preferred position for England.

Alexander-Arnold has found it tough to dislodge Kyle Walker from his starting role for England who is often preferred for his superior defensive ability which has often been the Liverpool man’s kryptonite.

During the latest Euros much fanfare surrounded Alexander-Arnold as then-England manager Gareth Southgate decided to play him in midfield, leading to plenty of talking points for pundits and fans alike.

Now the right-back has been given a new position on the other side of the defence at left-back.

This comes as a big surprise as, despite playing down the right flank in attacking and defensive roles as well as in midfield, the player has never started at left-back according to Transfermarkt.

Meanwhile, Kyle Walker starts in his usual role at right-back.

Speaking about the decision interim England boss Lee Carsley said: “Trent Alexander-Arnold is multi versatile and his role will be slightly different to a conventional left back. We haven’t won anything since 1966 and so we have to try something different.”

Carsely will be hoping he can unlock something special in the change as England take on Finland at 5pm this evening in the Nations League.
