Daniel Cormier opens up about Jon Jones Twitter outburst

We're waiting to see how Jones responds

Barely a week has passed since Daniel Cormier pulled out of his long-awaited rematch with Jon Jones at UFC 197.

The 37-year-old had been keen to avenge his January 2015 loss to ‘Bones’ – the only defeat of his 16-fight professional MMA career – but a leg injury put paid to it happening in Las Vegas this April.

Ovince Saint-Preux agreed to take Cormier’s place, ‘DC’ apologised for withdrawing, and that seemed to be that.

But then the Lafayette-born fighter decided to go on a lengthy Twitter outburst about his rival Jones, in which he brought up the former light-heavyweight champion’s jail time.

Cormier stayed silent for a few days after that, but he has now given an explanation to Fox Sports, claiming he was still under the influence of “honesty juice” following an operation to treat his injury.

“I was actually just getting out of the procedure so I was still under the influence of the stuff,” Cormier said.

“That played a part in that, too. I had the honesty juice in. So all of my media training went out the window because I was still a little loopy on the stuff that they gave me to put me under.

“It’s the little frustrations, Jon called me a coward, which is one thing, I’m not a coward.”

So, that’s that, right? Well, maybe not.

Cormier still had time to throw some more shade at his rival, saying “Those are pretty much layups. If I wanted to insult him, those things are easy to insult him about.”

We’re waiting to see how Jones responds – surely it can’t be long until he fires straight back.
