He’s only been in his new job for a couple of weeks, but José Mourinho has been hard at work.
Having reportedly splurged over £30m (work permit permitting) on a new defender many of us had never heard of, United’s new boss has now signed Michael Carrick up for another year.
Following United’s 2-1 FA Cup Final win over Crystal Palace last month, many had suggested that Carrick, whose previous contract with the club expired this summer, was set to leave Old Trafford.
But on Thursday, the 34-year-old confirmed on his Twitter page that he would be staying put at United.

“This great club has been a part of my life for the past 10 years,” Carrick is quoted as saying on ManUtd.com “I am delighted that this incredible journey is continuing.
“It’s great to have the opportunity to work under José Mourinho, who has achieved so much during his managerial career.
“I would like to thank the fans for their unwavering support. Winning the FA Cup was a special moment and, hopefully, we can go on to win more trophies in the future.”
Mourinho also paid tribute to the veteran midfielder:
“Michael is a very intelligent midfielder and a great reader of the game. I am pleased that he will be extending his contract. His form this year shows his ability and his enjoyment of the game are as strong as ever. Michael has a wealth of experience from his many years at the club and that knowledge will be invaluable to me. I am really looking forward to working with him.”
Despite Carrick’s new deal, Mourinho is expected to bolster his midfield before the start of the new season.
