Premier League clips are to made freely available on Twitter next season to fans in the UK and Ireland.
The social media company and Sky Sports have agreed on a deal to show clips of goals and key incidents within minutes of them occurring.
The video clips will be posted on Sky’s football Twitter account, while highlights of Premier League and Football league matches are set to be made available after games.
In recent years, the Premier League have rigorously clamped down on social media users that published footage from the English top flight on Twitter and other social media channels.
David Gibbs, the digital director for Sky Sports and Sky News, spoke of his excitement at the announcement.
“We’re delighted to be working with Twitter to bring in-game clips to football fans across the UK & Ireland as part of our biggest ever season of football. With more than 30 million users across a variety of platforms, Sky Sports is already the number one digital destination for sports in the UK. By expanding our partnership with Twitter, we can bring even more great action to an even bigger audience.”
The decision to publish clips from the Premier League on Twitter comes after a similar approach was taken during this summer’s European Championships in France. ITV Sport’s Twitter accounts frequently posted footage of goals from their televeised games seconds after they had been scored.
