Left back was at the top of most Liverpool fans’ transfer wishlist at the start of the summer.
Alberto Moreno’s performance in the Europa League final left many supporters, including Jamie Carragher, crying out for a signing to fill the gap on the left hand side of the Reds’ back four.
James Milner has been deputising admirably in the problem position but he was largely considered a stopgap before a new arrival.
But those optimistic fans who subscribed to that theory are in for a letdown as manager Jurgen Klopp has seemingly ruled out the signing of a new full back before the transfer window slams shut on Wednesday.
“We’re going to need more players for different positions,” Klopp told the Liverpool Echo after his side’s 1-1 draw with Spurs. “The only decision we made is that Milly can play it, especially in the kind of play we think we should play.
“Full-back is not only a winger in the offensive situations, it’s something like eight (roles) in different moments so that’s a really good position for Milly.
“He still has to adapt and learn because he’s not had 500 games in this position but we will work on it, like we work on every player.
“In the end we were convinced he could play the position and that’s why we didn’t make the transfer. I’m not surprised he can play there.”
Away from left back, Liverpool have been linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund youngster Christian Pulisic but Klopp refused to be drawn on that speculation.
“No transfer rumours,” Klopp said. “I have no comment on this. Absolutely nothing to speak about this and all the other cases too.
“When we know something and when are close to doing something, then we will inform you – or a little bit later.”
